From Bank Vaults to Boots to Baths to Bullion: The History Behind Our New Vancouver Flagship

2490 Main Street isn’t just our new flagship location — it’s a piece of Vancouver history.

Tucked in the heart of Mount Pleasant, this limestone and brick heritage building was originally constructed in 1929 as a branch of the Bank of Montreal. Designed by the renowned architectural duo J.J. Honeyman and George Curtis, its solid clay-brick exterior and carved stone signage still carry the weight of nearly a century of stories.

In its early years, the bank served a growing Mount Pleasant community, back when the neighborhood was still finding its shape — before the cranes, coffee roasters, and creative agencies moved in. Through the decades, 2490 Main witnessed the full spectrum of human drama: a note-based holdup in the 1960s, a would-be robber foiled by a language barrier in the 1970s, even a fake bomb extortion attempt in 1975. And yet, it endured — unshaken, unflashy, and always part of the fabric of the street.

Like the neighborhood around it, the building has transformed over time — housing a western boot store, a bath showroom, and most recently, a loan business. But through every chapter, it’s remained a place where people brought value, sought help, or exchanged something of meaning.

Now, nearly 100 years later, it’s starting a new chapter — and we’re honoured to be part of it.

Brothers Charlie and Chris, the co-founders of Canada Gold, started the business in 2008 with a small office in Vancouver and a big idea: to create a more honest, transparent, and welcoming way for people to sell their precious metals. In 2010, they opened their first storefront — Vancouver Gold, just a few blocks from where our new flagship now stands. That shop has welcomed thousands of customers over the years. And today, we carry that same spirit into a new space built on the values they started wit…

As we open the doors at 2490 Main, we’re not just preserving the past — we’re building toward something new. This space is filled with stories: of the city, of our company, and of the people who walk through our doors. And now, we’d love to hear yours.

What has selling or buying gold allowed you to do?

Maybe it helped cover a down payment on your first home. Maybe it turned old, forgotten jewellery into a weekend away, a new appliance, or even just a fancy dinner out. Maybe it gave you breathing room when you needed it most.

For many of our customers, these transactions aren’t just financial — they’re personal. They’re about security, independence, and new beginnings.

At Canada Gold, we believe you should always understand what your items are worth — and why. That’s why we test everything in front of you, explain every part of the process, and never pressure you to sell. It’s also why we’ve built this new flagship store to reflect who we are: approachable, expert, transparent, and proudly Canadian.

We’ve kept the original vaults. We’ve restored the stonework. And we’re ready to fill this space with trust, kindness, and real human connection — just like we have since the beginning.

Come visit us at 2490 Main — and help write the next part of this building’s story… and maybe your own.
