Beware of “Real Gold” Scams at Gas Stations

Customer Alert: Beware of “Real Gold” Sales at Gas Stations

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a growing number of customers come through our doors with a similar story, they were approached at a gas station by what appeared to be a family in distress. The individuals often drive nice-looking vans and tell an emotional story: they’ve lost their wallet, run out of gas, or are trying to get back home but don’t have money. To make it “fair,” they offer gold rings or jewellery in exchange for cash.

While it may sound like a heartwarming situation, and you naturally want to help, this is, unfortunately, part of a well-orchestrated scam that’s been happening across the country.

These scammers are convincing. They often wear nice clothing, appear clean and respectful, and may even have children with them. They insist they’re not begging, just trying to sell valuables to get through a tough situation. The jewellery they offer is almost always stamped “18K” or “22K” to make it look real, but in most cases, it’s fake or of negligible value.

Why This Scam Works

The scam works because it’s designed to tug on your heartstrings. The story feels urgent. You feel pressure to help, and they offer something in return, it doesn’t feel like a handout, which makes it even more convincing.

But here’s the truth:

This is a choreographed scheme targeting kind, trusting people. The jewellery has no real value, and once the cash is exchanged, they disappear. Victims only realize they’ve been scammed later, often when they bring the items in to be tested, and find out they’re worthless.

How to Protect Yourself

We’re sharing this message not to discourage generosity, but to help our community stay informed. If someone approaches you in a parking lot or gas station offering to sell gold jewellery, please don’t engage. It’s far more likely to be a scam than a real emergency.

If you do come across this situation:

Stay calm and don’t make quick decisions.

Politely decline and walk away.

Report the incident to local authorities if you feel unsafe or suspect fraud.

Where to Buy Gold Safely

If you’re looking to buy gold, whether as a gift, an investment, or a personal treat,  make sure you’re buying from a reputable source.

  • Buy from licensed jewellers and gold dealers you can verify.
  • Look for businesses that offer proper certification and transparent return policies.
  • Avoid purchasing gold from individuals in public spaces like parking lots or gas stations, no matter how compelling their story is.

We also recommend our trusted sister brand, 100 Ways Jewellery, a fantastic place to shop for gently used, authentic gold jewellery. You’ll find beautiful, affordable pieces, all tested for quality and authenticity. Save 50–90% off retail prices without compromising on style or trust. It’s a smart, sustainable way to buy real gold with confidence.
