The Canada Gold Story
Canada Gold: Built on Trust, Integrity, and a Legacy of Collecting
At Canada Gold, we are more than just gold buyers; we are a family-owned and operated business deeply rooted in Canadian values of fairness, transparency, and community.
Our story began with founder Chris Pollock’s lifelong passion for collecting and investing, inspired by his grandfather’s love of coins, stamps, and metal piggy banks. Chris’s uncle, an experienced investor, also helped shape his understanding of gold’s enduring value, famously commemorating the gold price hitting $800 an ounce with a custom license plate that read “GOLD800.”
In 2008, Chris was exploring ways to build a business rooted in those same passions. He placed his first Craigslist ad offering to buy gold — meeting customers in coffee shops with a gold-testing machine and scale tucked into his bag. Along the way, he discovered that many people had no idea what their items were truly worth.
He spoke to mail-in gold buyers and was offered disappointing payouts. He talked to a local refinery, only to learn they required high volumes to offer fair prices.
After buying a small lot of coins and jewellery on eBay, Chris realized there was a real market for honest, transparent, and accessible resale — and that customers deserved much better than what was out there. At the time, few companies posted their buying rates, and the industry lacked transparency.
Six months into Chris’s journey, his younger brother Charlie Pollock, then a university student studying economics, joined the project. Charlie built the very first Canada Gold website himself, while Chris continued meeting customers in person to test and purchase gold.
As customer demand grew, the need for a more secure, professional setting became clear. Chris and Charlie leased a small, shared office space in Vancouver — a private room inside a larger office building — to better serve their growing clientele.
Very quickly, they outgrew that first office and needed a streetfront location with a private reception area for customer comfort and security. They moved to 254 West Broadway, the site of the first full-time Vancouver Gold storefront — the same location they’ve called home for nearly 15 years before opening their new flagship store in 2025.
In 2010, their cousin, Russell Sparks helped expand the company’s footprint in Eastern Canada with the mission of refining the experience of dealing in precious metals for Canadians.
As momentum continued to build, another brother, Sam, trained with Chris and Charlie, for a summer and went on to open and manage additional stores while attending university. Youngest brother Michael followed suit.
As we look back on our journey, it’s clear that the legacy of Chris’s grandfather and uncle continues to shine brightly in everything we do. Just as they shared their passions with pride, we at Canada Gold are proud of how far we’ve come—from those early days of meeting customers in their own neighbourhoods to growing into the largest network of neighbourhood gold buyers across the country.
At Canada Gold, we’re still a family—dedicated to treating our customers the way we want our own loved ones to be treated. From the first customer to the thousands we’ve helped since, we’ll always honor the same principles that Chris, Charlie and Russell’s family instilled in them: honesty, integrity, and a passion for making gold and precious metals more accessible for everyone.
