In 1846, a young woman named Clothilde Gilbert found a gold nugget in a shallow river in the Beauce region, sparking one of Canada’s earliest gold rushes. In the 1900s, gold discoveries in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region helped bring new communities and mining activity to the north, with towns like Rouyn-Noranda, Val-d’Or and Malartic growing alongside the mines.
