Nova Scotia’s Coast, History and Character
Nova Scotia is shaped by the sea. From the Halifax waterfront and the historic streets of Lunenburg to the rocky coastline of Cape Breton and the beaches along the Northumberland Strait, the ocean is part of everyday life across the province. Long before today’s visitors came to the coastline, Nova Scotia was attracting people for another reason: gold. Gold was first documented in the province in 1858 at Mooseland, east of Halifax, and by the early 1860s prospectors were arriving from all over. Mining camps sprang up in communities like Waverley, Sherbrooke and Tangier, and gold was also found in 1861 at the Ovens, just across the harbour from Lunenburg.
