Alberta’s Long Connection To Gold
Alberta’s landscape and communities have been shaped by its natural resources, from the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and open prairies to its oil fields and forests.
Gold has its own place in that history. In 1859, gold was reported along the North Saskatchewan River near Fort Edmonton. Geologist James Hector of the Palliser Expedition reported the discovery of gold found in the river, and prospectors soon began searching the riverbanks and gravel for placer gold, gold that had been carried and deposited by the river. What started with people panning for gold eventually grew into larger mining operations, including the use of dredges in the 1890s.
From the Rocky Mountains to the heart of its cities, Alberta is home to some of Canada’s best-known landmarks.
