A true Canadian landmark is turning 50, and it’s being celebrated in a unique and collectible way.

This year, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced a special $2 commemorative circulation coin marking the 50th anniversary of the CN Tower – one of the most recognizable symbols of Toronto and a lasting representation of Canadian innovation.

A Coin That Tells a Story, Day and Night

What makes this release stand out is its dual design.

Each commemorative keepsake card includes two uncirculated $2 coins:

  • A classic engraved version
  • A colourized glow-in-the-dark edition

By day, the coin showcases a detailed view of the CN Tower overlooking Lake Ontario, surrounded by Toronto’s modern skyline. Subtle design elements highlight the city’s growth, with a contrast between the skyline in 1976 and today’s towering cityscape.

By night, the coin transforms.

Using photo-luminescent technology, the colourized version reveals a glowing night scene. When activated under light and viewed in the dark, the CN Tower and surrounding skyline illuminate, capturing the energy and vibrancy of Toronto after sunset.

Celebrating 50 Years of the CN Tower

Originally opened on June 26, 1976, the CN Tower quickly became a defining feature of Canada’s identity. For decades, it has stood as a symbol of engineering achievement, progress, and ambition.

This commemorative coin reflects that journey. Designed by Canadian illustrator Carl Wiens, it visually captures five decades of transformation, from a modest skyline to the world-class city Toronto is today.

On the obverse, the coin features the effigy of King Charles III, continuing the tradition of Canadian circulation coinage.
